I have had a nut allergy since I was little. This made it very difficult for me to enjoy treats at Halloween parties or even trick or treating. I usually had to bring a nut free treat with me to enjoy along with the other kids. I always loved haystacks, but the classic haystacks usually have peanut butter in them.
I took this classic treat and took the nuts out of it. My haystacks still have a sweet flavor of butterscotch and chocolate. I decided to amp these up a bit and add the monster eyes for the spooky season.
Milk Chocolate Chips – use milk chocolate chips instead of semisweet for a milder flavor
Chow Mein Noodles – these are usually found in the grocery aisle featuring Asian food ingredients
Setting up time – time can vary depending on how cool it is in your kitchen; you can also pop these in the refrigerator to set up faster
The basics….
- Stir your butterscotch and chocolate chips every 30-45 seconds to ensure it doesn’t burn
- Gently stir the noodles into the melted chips
- Add the candy monster eyes to each haystack before they harden
