The Upside Down Apple Cake

A retro classic cake with a twist

Equipment

  • 1 9x9 Baking Pan

Ingredients

  • 1 honey crisp apple sliced thinly
  • 1 stick salted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup cinnamon apple sauce
  • 1 tsp apple pie spice
  • 3 eggs

Instructions

  • Line and grease a 9x9 baking pan. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Place apple slices in bottom of pan
  • In a saucepan, melt butter and sugar together
  • Pour mixture over apples. Set aside
  • In a mixing bowl, stir cake mix, water, apple sauce, spice, and eggs until well-combined
  • Carefully, pour cake mix over apples
  • Bake for 35 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean
  • Let cool 10 minutes before flipping cake out onto platter
